A Texas couple faces child neglect and endangerment charges after authorities, responding to a tip, found their toddler in a hotel room surrounded by a gun, drugs, and alcohol.
On December 4, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check at the Comfort Suites Inn, a report of a juvenile in the presence of dangerous substances.
According to arrest records, deputies on the scene responded to room 414, where they contacted a couple identified in the report as Mason Douglas Wirth, 34, of Texas, and Emily Denise Wicker-Green, 30, of Texas. The couple’s five-year-old daughter was also located in the room.
According to the police report, the child was found sitting near marijuana, an open container of the alcoholic beverage Four Loko, and clear plastic cups containing what was believed to be vodka.
The report also indicated that deputies found both Mason and Emily appeared severely intoxicated, incoherent, and confused, compounding fears that the young child could hurt themselves in a variety of ways.
Upon a closer search, deputies found a gun unattended on an ironing board within reach of the child.
Emily also admitted that all adults in the room had been smoking marijuana, exposing the child to secondhand cannabis smoke.
Mason and Emily were arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
The report indicates that the Department of Children and Families was notified and investigated the child’s well-being.
