A nine-year-old boy was killed and at least five people injured in a two-vehicle crash in Tamarac Saturday, authorities said.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, two of the hospitalized survivors suffered life-threatening injuries in the wreck.
Jonathan Reyes was one of three people traveling west in a 2001 Toyota Corolla on West Commercial Boulevard around 6:14 p.m.
When the Corolla turned left at Northwest 50th Avenue, it drove straight into the path of a 2023 Chevrolet Traverse, authorities said.
The Traverse, which had been traveling east in the center lane of West Commercial Boulevard, struck the passenger side of the Corolla in a “t-bone collision,” according to BSO.
Amid the wreckage at the scene, the Corolla’s three occupants were rescued and rushed to Broward Health Medical Center.
Doctors pronounced Reyes dead a short time later.
The Corolla’s other two occupants suffered “injuries that were considered life-threatening,” according to BSO. An update on their conditions was not immediately available Wednesday.
The occupants of the Traverse were rushed to Northwest Hospital in Margate and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said.
Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the cause of the crash. Their probe is ongoing.
Reyes was a student at Oakland Park Elementary. A GoFundMe has been set up in the child’s name.
