Nosy Neighbor Foils Air Conditioning Theft in Tamarac

Photo Illustration of an Air Conditioning unit that criminals broke into.  They are looking for copper in A/C units to resell.

An alert Tamarac neighbor saw something suspicious and ended up stopping a burglary in progress by using her instincts.

The neighbor first noticed a black pick-up truck slowly drive by her residence at around 1:15 p.m today in Mainlands 5. The vehicle came back by and stopped at a neighbor’s residence.  Knowing that the neighbor was currently out of the country, she watched and witnessed an unknown male exit the truck, walk to the side of the residence, and begin removing the air conditioning unit.

The alert neighbor immediately called Broward Sheriff’s Office in Tamarac at 911 where deputies quickly responded to the area and took the subject into custody.

BSO thanks the alert neighbor.  She noticed something that didn’t look quite right, followed her instincts, and a criminal went to jail.

Air Conditioner Theft – Growing Problem
The global demand for copper, combined with the economic and home foreclosure crisis, is creating an increase in copper-theft crimes. Theft of air conditioning units has become increasingly popular and is on the rise because of the copper and aluminum contained within them. The units are being stolen entirely or by unscrewing the top and removing the guts and leaving behind the metal casing. Residential air conditioning unit thefts are easy prey occurring during the day when no one is home and also at night when people are asleep

My neighbor in Tamarac Mainlands 6 also had his A/C stolen about a month ago.

So probably best to report any strangers in someone yard, rather be safe then sorry.
