Volunteers came together to help people in Jamaica who were affected by Hurricane Melissa.
Nearly 800 volunteers gathered at Community Christian Church in Tamarac to pack bags of rice, vegetables, vitamins, and seasonings as part of Join the Pack Jamaica on November 21-22.
Through a partnership among Food for the Poor, Feed My Starving Children, and Community Christian, 140,000 meals have been packed by volunteers and sent to hard-hit areas in Jamaica.
“We thank the volunteers for coming to pack food, and we want to help people in Jamaica who suffered from Melissa,” said Maricarmen Angulano, Community Coordinator for Food the Poor. who organized the volunteer effort.
Volunteers worked in shifts to pack meals, and the event had a festive atmosphere. Families worked together, and music was playing. “I am from Jamaica and I want to be here helping people who need food,” said Caroline Forbes, a volunteer.
Diane Newman came with her three children and mother to pack food. “I am from Jamaica and I love to help others,” she said.
Feed My Starving Children arranged to provide the food that was packed. The organization worked to have large bags of rice, vegetables, and other items trucked to Tamarac for packing, according to Amy Barneck of Feed My Starving Children.
