A 21-year-old man is behind bars after the Tamarac Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives say he participated in a nationwide fraud scheme that tricked an elderly woman into handing over more than $300,000 in gold.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, detectives are now searching for additional victims who may have been targeted by similar scams in which callers pose as federal law enforcement officials.
The investigation began last month after a 75-year-old woman reported being defrauded out of family savings she had accumulated over approximately 33 years.
Investigators said the victim first received a phone call from someone claiming to work in Walmart’s fraud department, who alleged a $1,400 Apple laptop had been fraudulently purchased in her name. After she denied making the purchase, the caller transferred her through multiple people before she spoke with a man identifying himself as “U.S. Marshal Adam Peterson.”
According to detectives, the suspect falsely claimed the victim’s identity had been linked to an abandoned vehicle in Texas containing narcotics, cash, and evidence of human trafficking. He allegedly told her that a federal arrest warrant had been issued and that she could either hire an attorney for $100,000 or cooperate with a federal investigation to clear her name.
Authorities said the caller provided fake badge numbers, case numbers, phone numbers, and the names of fictitious government employees to make the story appear legitimate.
The victim was instructed to liquidate her financial assets and convert the money into gold, which the suspects claimed would be held securely until the investigation ended. Detectives said she followed the instructions, packaged the gold as directed, wrote an account number on the package, and remained on the phone with the suspect while transporting it.
The caller then instructed her to meet a courier at a gas station and provide a code before handing over the package. She later realized she had been scammed.
Following the investigation, detectives identified 21-year-old Mohit Mohit as the person who allegedly collected the packages. Investigators said a red Honda Accord and a gray Jeep SUV were used during the scheme.
Mohit was arrested in Bradford County on a Broward Sheriff’s Office warrant. He is charged with scheme to defraud, grand theft from a person 65 or older, and unlawful use of a two-way communications device.
Detectives believe Mohit was an active participant in a large-scale organized fraud operation and suspect there may be additional victims.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that law enforcement agencies will never call to demand money or request personal banking information. Officials urge the public never to send money in response to unexpected phone calls, texts, or emails; avoid sharing financial information with unsolicited callers; verify requests through official phone numbers or websites; and immediately hang up and report any suspicious contact to local authorities.
