A donation will enable four Coral Springs Police Department K-9 officers to be outfitted with bullet—and stab-protective vests for the first time.
K-9s Bono, Chucky, Bolo, and Brutus are getting their new body armor courtesy of the nonprofit charity organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., based in Massachusetts. The vests are expected to be delivered within eight to ten weeks.
Police said the four-legged officers have not previously worn body armor vests valued at around $1,800 each.
“We are incredibly grateful to Vested Interest in K-9s for their donation of four bullet—and—stab-protective vests for our K-9s,” said Coral Springs Police Chief Brad McKeone. These custom-fitted vests will provide an essential layer of protection for our K-9s during high-risk situations.”
Vested Interest in K9s provides specially-fitted K-9 vests and other assistance to dogs working in law enforcement and similar fields across the country. The body armor is made in the U.S. and certified by the federal government’s National Institute of Justice.
Since launching in 2009, the company has supplied more than 5,707 vests to K-9s in all 50 states, worth $6.9 million, police said. Their work is made possible through private and corporate donations.
There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K-9s in the U.S., police said.
