Tamarac Commissioner Marlon Bolton led a Day of Action for Hurricane Melissa victims at the Community Center on November 5.
A group of volunteers helped people who dropped off items such as water, nonperishable food, and hygiene products. Vanessa Freixas, Executive Assistant to the City Manager, remembers Hurricane Andrew as a child. “People helped us after Andrew, and now I want to help the people affected by Melissa,” she said.
Gabriela Moya volunteered and helped receive food items. “I like to volunteer and help people in need,” she said. Community members were encouraged to bring essential items.
“We are humbled by the outpouring of support from our community as we come together to help our brothers and sisters in Jamaica, who Hurricane Melissa has devastated,” said Bolton, who participated in the event. “Every donation, big or small, brings hope and relief to those affected by this disaster.”
The food items were packaged and shipped in shipping containers to charity organizations that are distributing them to people affected by the hurricane.
