The leaders of HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital were looking for a way to become more involved in the Tamarac community and encourage healthy living.
They arranged a meeting with Mayor Michelle J. Gomez, who is promoting her Move with the Mayor and 5K Club, to discuss a relationship. HCA Woodmont and Gomez formed a partnership in which the hospital will provide financial support for the 5K Club to cover a fitness instructor, snacks, water, and the costs associated with opening the park early on Saturday morning.
“We want to encourage healthy living and exercise. We would rather have people participate in exercise programs than come to our hospital,” said Morgan Taylor, spokesperson for HCA Woodmont.
Taylor participated in the 5K Club’s January 10 run at Tephford Park. The club will host a run/walk on the second Saturday morning of each month. Each event will begin at 7 a.m. on the west end of the park with a stretching session at 7:30 a.m. Participants can either walk or run a 5K (3.1 miles). The runners/walkers complete two laps on a pathway inside the park, and people are encouraged to run or walk at their own pace.
“I want people to come out and get some exercise in a comfortable environment. This will give people a chance to run or walk with other people and have fun,” said Gomez.
The next 5K Club run/walk will take place on February 14, starting at 7:00 a.m., at Tephford Park, 10101 Southgate Boulevard. The event will be free, and people of all athletic abilities are welcome.
