Din-Yero Milligan, Jr., was considering a career as a police detective, earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Florida Atlantic University, and was ready to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Then, his father suffered a heat stroke, and he saw a group of paramedics save his life. “From that time on, I decided I wanted to become a firefighter/paramedic,” he said.
After completing the training to become a firefighter/paramedic, Milligan, 25, was hired by Tamarac Fire Rescue and is now among nine probationary firefighters. Milligan has big career goals.
“I want to work my way up the ranks and become a fire chief. I want to use the latest technology to improve firefighting,” he said.
Another new firefighter is Jenifer Massa, 49. She comes to Tamarac after a career in corporate cybersecurity.
After working in business, Massa wanted to focus on serving the community and chose a career in firefighting. She was especially impressed with Tamarac and intends to implement a community paramedicine program where paramedics check on residents who have medical issues.
“I want a bigger purpose, and I want to work on establishing stronger relationships between the fire department and the community,” she said.
Jason Abreu, 23, was impressed by the discipline and professionalism he saw at Tamarac. A graduate of Hollywood Hills High School, he spent several years in the restaurant industry before pursuing a career in firefighting.
“I love the discipline of firefighting, and I want to help the community,” he said.
Other new Tamarac firefighters include Yanier Garcia, Arielle Curbelo, Joshua Omes, Joseph Swiderski, Nicholas Blandino, and Christian Coleman.
Deputy Chief Jonathan Frasher is pleased with the new firefighters.
“We hired a good group, and we want them to be successful. We work to provide a supportive environment and give them the resources to do well,” he said.
