A 5-month-old infant remains in critical condition, and the child’s father has been arrested in connection with what authorities have identified as a case of aggravated child abuse.
According to Lauderhill Police investigation records and medical experts, Abraham West, 30, of Miami Beach, was arrested for child abuse related to an incident that took place on October 18.
Records show Lauderhill PD was notified of a child abuse case after the infant was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at BHMC. The child had initially been transferred from Northwest Regional Hospital in Margate, where he was admitted with congestion and later experienced seizure-like activity.
Medical evaluations revealed extensive injuries, which investigators say are inconsistent with accidental trauma. The records show the infant’s injuries included multiple rib fractures in varying stages of healing, subdural hemorrhages, brain swelling, and extensive retinal hemorrhages. The child required intubation and remained in critical condition as of Christmas Eve.
According to records, the child’s mother had left for work early on October 17, leaving the infant in West’s care. Later that day, West texted her, concerned about the child’s breathing. Upon returning home, the mother found the child unresponsive, and the couple rushed him to Northwest Regional Hospital.
During examinations at the hospital, records show the infant began seizing and was immediately transferred to Broward Health Medical Center.
Lauderhill PD records show both parents provided statements denying knowledge of any trauma or abuse. However, West suggested the injuries may have resulted from the child hitting his head on a bassinet’s metal frame or from playing “Superman.”
Evidence detailed by medical specialists pointed to injuries inflicted on at least two separate occasions in the two weeks preceding the hospitalization.
Based on medical findings and expert consultations, authorities determined probable cause to arrest West. He was arrested on December 12 and charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect causing great bodily harm, permanent disability, or disfigurement.
The Department of Children and Families has since intervened, and the infant has been removed from parental custody.
There is no further update on the child’s medical status at this time.
