A woman and her new partner have been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking her ex-boyfriend, an armed security guard, at a local shopping plaza.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office affidavit, on March 4, deputies responded to an altercation at 2701 West Oakland Park Boulevard, where they met with the victim, an armed security guard.
The victim reported that his ex-girlfriend, Micaela Yerlas Coronato, 26, of Tamarac, had arrived at his workplace unexpectedly. He explained to law enforcement that the two – who had been in a six-year relationship and had recently separated – had engaged in a heated verbal altercation.
Records show that as the argument escalated, the victim and Coronato moved toward the west side of the office building, where Coronato’s new boyfriend, Steven Rainey, 30, of Tamarac, confronted them.
The victim alleged that Rainey threw a punch at him, which led to a full-fledged fight. While the two men fought on the ground, Coronato reportedly got involved, slapping the victim multiple times before grabbing his holstered firearm—a .32 caliber Kel-Tec handgun.
Witnesses and the victim stated that Coronato then pointed the firearm at the victim’s head and asked Rainey, “Should I shoot him?” According to records, Rainey would later admit to law enforcement that he advised Coronato to, indeed, shoot the victim.
The victim, still on the ground, claimed to have heard two clicks from his firearm. Fortunately, no bullets were discharged as there were no rounds chambered at the time.
The report shows that Coronato – realizing what she had done and that the gun wasn’t loaded — tossed the weapon and fled the scene with Rainey in a silver Lexus.
Authorities later interviewed a witness who corroborated the victim’s account, stating he had seen a female pointing a gun at the security guard and heard two clicks. Law enforcement also obtained a video recording from another anonymous source, which reportedly captured Coronato aiming the firearm and pulling the trigger.
An incident report notes that the victim was visibly shaken and told deputies he wished to prosecute Coronato and Rainey for attempting to take his life.
On March 5, Coronato and Rainey were both taken into custody and charged with attempted murder. They were transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where they remain without bond.
