Tamarac State of the City address by Mayor Michelle Gomez. {City of Tamarac}
Dear Neighbors,
As I am writing this newsletter, we are experiencing a cold front. Still, by the time you read this, the weather is guaranteed to be warmer as we enter March and welcome Spring on March 20th! We have fantastic events planned for you to enjoy!
Before we move on to March, let’s take a small step back into February – thank you to everyone who came out to support the 2026 FurEver Friends Pet Expo! Commissioner Wright and I are grateful to the 10 pet rescues and companion organizations that were on-site along with American Red Cross who conducted Pet CPR sessions and Tamarac Fire Rescue conducted hands-only CPR, Broward County Animal Care for microchipping, vaccinating and registering Broward County residents’ pets, face painting and pet art, a Red Carpet Pet Parade and over 40 vendors to help keep our feathered, furbabies, and people healthy, happy and in-style! Over 750 people and their pets attended this tail-wagging celebration of pets, rescues, and community spirit! The energy was incredible — and the love was everywhere.
Huge thanks to our amazing rescues, vendors, volunteers, and City Staff who made this event possible. Some lucky pets found their FurEver homes, and many more adoptions are in progress.
Please save the Date of February 20, 2027, for next year’s FurEver Friends Pet Expo and know that if you want to adopt or need pet care before then, we are happy to connect you to these amazing rescues and vendors.
Strategic Planning sessions will take place on March 4th and 5th. It is here that the City Commission will discuss plans for the new year so we can budget accordingly.
This year’s Groove on the Grass Concert in the Park series kicks off on Friday, March 6th, featuring Zaya, as seen on American Idol. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy a wonderful free evening of music and food trucks under the stars, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Caporella Park, 5200 Prospect Road.
Calling all Elementary, Middle and High School Chess Enthusiasts to the J.P. Taravella High School Chess Tournament from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, March 7th! The tournament will take place at the school (10600 Riverside Drive, Coral Springs). Time to practice now as I look forward to you beating me at the Mayors’ Chess Challenge on Saturday, October 31st, at the Tamarac Community Center.
Let’s get ready to spring forward again! Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, March 8th. If your clocks do not automatically adjust, please remember to set them forward one hour before you go to sleep Saturday night, March 7th, and get ready to enjoy a brighter start to your mornings after the time change!
March is also when we pay tribute to America’s history, recognizing the rich contributions of Women. Join us at 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 11th, in the Chambers at City Hall as we recognize five outstanding Women Leaders for their impactful contributions at the start of the City Commission Meeting.
The Movies in the Park series also returns on Friday, March 20th. Start the night off at 6:30 p.m. with fun kids’ activities of face painting, inflatables, and more, with the movie, the animated Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch 2, starting at 8:00 p.m., at Tamarac Park and sponsored by The P.A.R.O.T. Foundation.
On Saturday, March 28th, please join us for our sensory-inclusive Springfest Egg Hunt, starting promptly at 9:00 a.m., at the Tamarac Sports Complex, baseball field 1 (9901 NW 77th Street). This event is for ages 10 and under with a parent or legal guardian and encourages excitement, discovery, and sensory exploration in a supportive environment at the Tamarac Sports Complex. Make sure to add it to your calendar.
And a little later that morning at the same place, catch a little hop in your step at Peter Cottontail’s Springfest! Join us for a fun-filled community event with bounce houses, games, an egg hunt, and more! The egg hunt begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. and is open to children ages 10 and under, so be sure to arrive on time. Bring your basket and follow Peter Cottontail on his trail to find colorful eggs and enjoy all the excitement! This event is free for everyone.
