A man faces grand theft charges in an alleged $70,000 fake check scheme involving checks created during employee training at Bright Star Credit Union.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office investigation, Shawn Edward Mathew Noel, 27, of Coral Springs, is accused of two counts of grand theft involving checks for $40,000 and $30,000 made payable to him from Bright Star.
The original criminal case was investigated by the Lauderhill Police Department because the Bright Star location where the crime took place was at 1593 Northwest 40th Avenue.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the investigation began after the credit union discovered that several cashier’s checks had been generated during employee training by a former female employee on a new processing system.
Investigators said the checks were supposed to be part of a simulation and should not have been printed for actual use. Instead, the female employee allegedly put them in Noel’s name.
Police said a former credit union employee was linked to five cashier’s checks created between January 10 and 14. Two of those checks were allegedly made payable to Noel, one for $40,000 and another for $30,000.
According to investigators, both checks were later deposited on January 13 into an account belonging to Noel’s company, One Line Connect LLC, at Space Coast Credit Union. Bank records showed both deposits were later returned with the reason listed as “Altered/Fictitious Check.”
Police said surveillance footage from Bright Star Credit Union showed the former employee creating checks during the training period. Investigators alleged she used account information without authorization, printed the checks, placed the paperwork in a bin on her desk, and later carried the bin out of view. The affidavit notes that investigators could not conclusively determine what happened to the checks after that point.
The affidavit also indicates investigators had been attempting to resolve the case for months. Noel previously agreed to meet with detectives and was interviewed during the investigation. The former employee, meanwhile, has retained an attorney, and police sought a warrant for her arrest as part of the broader investigation.
Noel was ultimately taken into custody on August 9 by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
There is no arrest record for the former employee named in the report.
