A Tamarac man is facing multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, after deputies say he shot a woman inside his home before barricading himself inside the residence.
According to a Broward Sheriff’s Office complaint affidavit, deputies responded to a home on the 8200 block of Northwest 74th Terrace on September 23 after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds to her lower left leg.
The report says neighbors told deputies the victim had crawled from the home bleeding before collapsing near the sidewalk. She was rushed to Broward Health North Medical Center for treatment.
Surveillance video obtained by investigators showed the victim arriving at the residence with another man, later identified as the alleged shooter, Eric Perez, 43, earlier in the day. Hours later, she was seen limping and crawling from the property while Perez followed behind her. A neighbor called 911, and while waiting for deputies to arrive, the man appeared to hose down blood from the driveway.
Detectives identified Perez as the suspect after determining he lived in an efficiency attached to the residence. The victim later positively identified him as the shooter, telling detectives that she had been alone inside the unit with him when she was shot. She said the two had been using drugs together before she fell asleep and awoke to a burning sensation in her leg.
Deputies surrounded the home after witnesses reported Perez had run inside. Negotiators treated the incident as a barricade situation, repeatedly calling for him to surrender. Hours later, Perez was taken into custody after SWAT and BSO K-9 units were finally able to get inside the home.
During a search of his room, detectives found 9mm ammunition but no firearm. Perez admitted during an interview that he argued with the victim after suspecting her involvement in the theft of his dog. He told detectives the victim had pulled out a gun and that the two struggled over it before it discharged. However, investigators said the woman’s injuries were not consistent with a struggle.
Perez was arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail on charges of attempted felony murder, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, and tampering with physical evidence.
