By: Sharon Aron Baron

The City of Tamarac contracts with Waste Management of Florida, Inc. to provide all residential solid waste services including collection of household garbage, bulky waste, yard waste, and recycling.

Trash Cans

Trash and recycling carts come in three sizes: 35-gallon, 65-gallon, and 95-gallon. Once per year, residents may select the size of the cart they want at no additional charge. However, if you are new to the city, or require a bigger cart due to a change in circumstances like an added family member, contact Waste Management at 866-684-3142.

Garbage

Which size is right for you?

All carts should be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the pick-up day or set out the night before. Carts not at the curb when the trucks service the area will not be picked up until the next scheduled day. Waste Management will only pick up garbage and recycling in the Waste Management carts and will not pick up extra bags on the ground or next to the can. In the event that a can is broken, lost, or stolen, residents should contact Waste Management for a replacement.

Residents are recommended to bag their garbage before placing it in the carts to prevent litter and keep their garbage carts clean. By bagging your garbage, your cart should only need to be rinsed out occasionally to keep it clean and odor-free.

Recycling

The following recycling tips apply to ALL recycling in Tamarac. This includes curbside and multifamily carts as well as recycling stations in Tamarac’s buildings and parks.

Do Recycle

  • Plastic Containers #1 – #7 (no caps or lids)
  • Newspaper
  • Junk mail and mixed paper
  • Cereal boxes
  • Cardboard (24×24 pieces or less)
  • Cans: Aluminum, Steel, & Tin
  • Milk cartons
  • Juice boxes

Don’t Recycle

  • Plastic bags
  • Glass Bottles or Jars
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic “to go” containers
  • Miscellaneous plastic, e.g. toys
  • Miscellaneous metals, e.g. pots, pans, utensils, scrap metal
  • Window or auto glass
  • Light bulbs
  • Mirrors
  • Ceramic cookware
  • Pizza box bottoms or other materials with food residue

Tamarac uses “single-stream” recycling, which means that all recyclable materials can be placed in the same cart.

Do not use plastic bags. Do not place any plastic bags in the recycling carts and do not put recyclable materials in plastic bags.

Please avoid placing household garbage and non-recyclable materials such as Styrofoam cups, plastic plates, and utensils, plastic bags, etc. into recycling carts. This can decrease the value of the recyclables and reduce the revenue paid to the City.

NEVER put hazardous waste or old electronics in your recycling or regular garbage. Tamarac residents can participate in drop-off events for these items, hosted in conjunction with other local cities.

Bulk Trash

bulk trash

Bulk Trash (curbside/single-family) is collected weekly and includes household items such as couches, chairs, mattresses, tables, appliances, carpeting, etc.

Tree trimmings, branches, lumber, carpeting, and metal poles must be cut into sections not to exceed 4 feet in length and tied in bundles of 40 pounds or less. Residents are limited to no more than 3 cubic yards of bulk trash and yard waste each week; however, it is collected once every week.

Bulk Trash (condominiums) is collected quarterly on:

January    1/5//2022

April          4/6/2022

July           7/6/2022

October   10/5/2022

Collection items include household items such as couches, chairs, mattresses, tables, appliances, carpeting, etc. Residents should contact property management prior to setting out bulk trash materials to determine when and where to place to materials.

Construction material (roof shingles, tiles, remodeling or construction debris, sheetrock, concrete, brickwork, etc.) will not be collected with bulk and the resident is responsible for legal disposal.

Also, any “commercially generated” waste will not be collected. Examples include yard waste or debris left by a landscaping service, contractor, electrician, etc. This type of material should be removed by the contractor and disposed of in a legal and responsible manner.

Hazardous Waste

Special and hazardous wastes including, but not limited to, construction materials, paints, automobile parts, electronics, and household cleaners are excluded and will not be collected.  See Hazardous Waste collection here.

Residents receive solid waste service Monday through Friday all year. The only exception is if their normal collection occurs on December 25, it will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled day.
