A fugitive being pursued by the U.S. Marshals Service in Tamarac died after he jumped into a canal while trying to escape arrest, authorities said.
The marshals tried serving their warrant on the man around Wed. 11:48 a.m. in the 100 block of Clairmont Circle, but he ran away and jumped into the nearby body of water, authorities said.
His pursuers jumped in, too, but could not find the alleged fugitive.
Divers from the Sunrise Fire Rescue Department and rescuers from Tamarac Fire Rescue and the Broward Sheriff’s Office all tried to locate the man.
He was later pulled from the canal and pronounced dead, having apparently drowned, authorities said.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the fugitive was involved in an armed kidnapping in their city on Feb. 13 before investigators tracked him to Tamarac.
The armed kidnapping victims, both juveniles, were abducted, beaten and robbed by a group of attackers, police said. They were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The dead suspect’s name was not made public.
