Ha-Ha’s for the TaTas Returns to Tamarac for a Night of Comedy Supporting Cancer Awareness 5

Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez will bring comedy and cancer awareness together at her annual Ha-Ha’s for the TaTas fundraiser, returning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Colony West Golf Club, 6850 NW 88th Ave.

Presented by PuroClean, the event will feature stand-up comedy, live music, food, and a limited silent auction to support people and families affected by cancer.

Since its first show in October 2023, Ha-Ha’s for the TaTas has donated a combined $80,000 to the Tamarac Employees Benevolent Fund, Gilda’s Club of South Florida and the American Cancer Society, according to Gomez.

Comedian and cancer survivor Derek Richards will headline this year’s show, with Vincent Cheeks opening and Flip Schultz serving as emcee and featured performer.

Saxophonist Julien “Jay” Wray will perform while guests enjoy hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and soft drinks. A cash bar will also be available.

For Gomez, who has undergone cancer treatment, the mission is personal. She told Tamarac Talk that two male neighbors diagnosed with breast cancer helped inspire the breast cancer ribbon that they use to promote the event. One died on Oct. 3, 2022. The other survived but struggled to get insurance coverage for his treatment and testing, she said.

Gomez also recalled seeing a longtime city employee and his wife at a follow-up appointment after one of her radiation treatments. A few days later, the employee died after a lengthy battle with colon cancer. He and the goodwill of city employees inspired the Tamarac Employees Benevolent Fund.

With the love and support she received during her battle, and the desire to give back, help, and bring awareness in a fun way, the Ha-Ha’s for the Tatas Comedy event was created, as Gomez believes laughter is the best medicine.

While the fundraiser takes place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Gomez said it raises awareness of all cancers and emphasizes that breast cancer affects both women and men.

“The other inspiration is the strong women and men who fought or are fighting breast cancer or any cancer,” Gomez said to Tamarac Talk.

The evening will include a video tribute supporting those undergoing treatment, honoring survivors and remembering those who have died. Gomez also recognized the importance of “the families and friends who give us the energy to keep going!”

Ha-Ha’s for the TaTas became a Florida not-for-profit organization this year and is pursuing federal 501(c)(3) status, according to Gomez.
