Leon Vandarrell Golfin Jr {BSO}
A Lauderhill man is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder after authorities say he opened fire on two people outside an apartment complex in April.
According to court documents filed by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Leon Vandarrell Golfin Jr., 29, was arrested following a Lauderhill Police Department investigation that stemmed from a shooting on April 16.
Records show that deputies responded to a ShotSpotter alert and a 911 call regarding gunfire near an apartment on Northwest 56th Avenue. A call also came from a female victim who had fled the scene and was found at a nearby 7-Eleven on West Oakland Park Boulevard suffering from injuries to her arm and face.
The victim told officers she was ambushed while returning belongings to a friend, Ashanti Taylor, 22, of Lauderhill, who Golfin accompanied. She claimed that a verbal dispute allegedly escalated when Taylor sprayed the victim with pepper spray.
According to the report, as the woman attempted to leave the scene, Golfin reportedly exited the apartment with a Glock 19 handgun and opened fire, striking the victim’s vehicle multiple times. A male passenger was also inside the car at the time of the shooting and was injured. Both survived the incident.
Upon arrival at the scene of the shooting, the deputies located shell casings at the scene, a shattered window at the apartment, and recovered multiple firearms from inside the residence, including stolen weapons and an extended magazine, according to the report.
Records show Golfin initially declined to speak with detectives but later confessed to firing the weapon, stating it was “not really self-defense” and that he bought the firearm “off the streets.”
He claimed to have thrown the gun into a nearby lake following the shooting, according to the report. Police say DNA was collected, and a search warrant led to the discovery of three guns, one of which was reported stolen from the Hollywood Police Department.
Both Taylor and Golfin were arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail on April 17. Golfin was formally charged with attempted murder on July 9 and remains held without bond.
Taylor faces charges of aggravated battery connected to her use of pepper spray on the victim.
