A Lauderhill man has been charged with attempted murder after repeatedly stabbing another man during a drug-fueled argument in the early morning hours.
According to a Lauderhill Police Department report, James Riccardo Bailey, 54, of Lauderhill, was taken into custody after allegedly attacking another man with a Smith & Wesson hunting knife at his residence located near the 2200 block of Northwest 48th Terrace.
Authorities reportedly responded to a 911 call at approximately 4:51 a.m. and arrived at the scene to find a bloodied crime scene with both the victim and the defendant requiring medical attention.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when the victim visited Bailey’s condo and was later joined by his brother. The three men were hanging out in a bedroom, consuming alcohol and cannabis, when an argument erupted between Bailey and the victim.
The victim told officers a verbal dispute escalated, and Bailey allegedly reached under his mattress, retrieved a hunting knife, and repeatedly stabbed the victim in the back and head, causing serious injuries. The victim also sustained a defensive wound to his thumb.
The victim’s brother, who had fallen asleep, was awakened by the chaotic and bloody situation and witnessed Bailey attacking the victim. He attempted to intervene and sustained minor slash wounds to his hand before managing to call the police.
Upon arrival, the report shows that officers discovered a bloodstained knife at the scene, which was recovered as evidence.
Both Bailey and the victim were transported to Broward General Medical Center for treatment. Bailey was treated for a swollen left eye and other minor injuries before being discharged and taken into custody.
Reports show that Bailey agreed to provide a statement to investigators at the hospital but claimed he had no recollection of the stabbing, only remembering the argument and then waking up at the hospital. He later claimed that the victim had lunged at him, prompting him to act in self-defense, though he could not explain how he ended up armed with the knife or how the victim sustained multiple stab wounds.
Bailey was medically cleared and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
