A man who opened fire on law enforcement officers was wounded in a police-involved shooting in Lauderhill Wednesday night, and a second suspect is still on the loose, authorities said Thursday.
Tafari Elliot, 28, of Lauderhill, was struck by gunfire after he and another armed suspect confronted Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and police officers during a joint anti-gang operation at the Calypso Cay apartments in the 4100 block of Northwest 21st Street in Lauderhill.
According to BSO, the two men pointed guns at members of BSO’s Gang Investigations Task Force, which includes members of the Lauderhill Police Department.
A BSO deputy drew his duty weapon, identified himself as a law enforcement officer, and issued commands for the men to drop their firearms and get on the ground, the sheriff’s office said.
Neither of the men complied, according to BSO. Instead, both men fired their guns at the task force members, who returned fire, BSO officials said.
A BSO deputy and a Lauderhill Police officer both fired their weapons during the incident, according to BSO.
Responding officers took Elliot into custody in the apartment complex and began providing medical aid, officials said. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment, where he remained hospitalized Thursday.
Elliot faces two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
The second suspect fled the scene of the shooting and had not been located by law enforcement as of Thursday, officials said.
Neither law enforcement officer who opened fire was injured during the incident.
Detectives said they recovered a firearm from the scene.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the use of force by the task force members, while BSO’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the crimes committed by Elliot and the second man, according to BSO.
The BSO deputy who fired his gun has been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation, which is standard BSO procedure.
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the second gunman is asked to call BSO Homicide Detective Zach Scott at 954-321-4200 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch App.
Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), submit a tip online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477).
Wednesday’s shooting followed a separate shooting Monday at 4051 Northwest 19th Street in Lauderhill, which left a man wounded. Police believe there were two shooters in Monday’s incident. No arrests have been announced in that case.
The victim in Monday’s shooting suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
