A man was arrested and charged with grand theft after police say a woman used a tracking app to find the man who stole her purse from a supermarket parking lot.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office probable cause affidavit, Anthony Rengasami, 45, of Sunrise, was taken into custody on October 26, following a month-long investigation into the theft outside Quince Supermarket, located at 6820 North University Drive.
Detectives say the incident occurred on September 22, when the victim reported that her purse had been taken from her shopping cart while she was loading groceries into her car. Surveillance footage from the supermarket reportedly showed Rengasami with three children, all dressed in red school uniforms, approaching the cart, taking the purse, and then walking into the store to shop.
Investigators said the victim later tracked her missing phone to a residence identified as Rengasami’s, located near the 5800 block of Northwest 14th Court in Sunrise. After recognizing the vehicle, the victim sat in her car and pulled up Rengasami’s face from his Facebook profile photo. The victim provided police with screenshots and images linking him to the theft.
During a photo lineup on October 16, the victim identified Rengasami as the person she saw in the parking lot. The stolen items, valued at $3,050, included a Tory Burch purse, a Coach wallet, a Lexus key, a Galaxy S23+ smartphone, and $750 in cash.
When detectives arrived at Rengasami’s residence, he admitted to taking the purse, saying he kept the phone and cash but discarded the rest of the items. Police said he voluntarily handed over the stolen Galaxy S23+ and confessed he had also kept a gold bracelet worth $363.
Rengasami was booked into the Broward County Main Jail and charged with one count of grand theft between $750 and $5,000. His bond was set at $2,500.
