A Tamarac man is in custody, facing multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening to kill his wife and burn down their home over her plans to file for a divorce.
According to Broward County Sheriff’s Office records, on August 18, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Tamarac in response to a 911 domestic violence call.
Records show that upon arrival, deputies encountered a volatile situation involving a man, later identified as Michael Harris, 48, of Tamarac, and his family members.
According to the police report, the incident began as a verbal altercation between Harris and his wife, who had expressed a desire to end their relationship. The argument, which took place in the kitchen, quickly escalated when Harris reportedly became upset and belligerent.
Witnesses, including the couple’s daughters, observed Harris shove his wife multiple times before placing his hands around her throat. The situation intensified when Harris allegedly grabbed a large kitchen knife and threatened to kill his wife, stating, “I’ll just do it right now.”
According to the victim, things escalated even further when Harris obtained a loaded firearm, which was kept on top of a metal dryer, and began waving it around while shouting, “Does anyone else have anything else to say?”
The family members present, including the couple’s daughters, also told deputies Harris continued to yell he would “burn the house down.”
Records show Harris eventually put down the firearm, but he continued to criticize and shove his wife. He also reportedly attempted to retrieve an assault rifle from a bedroom but was unable to do so.
After speaking with witnesses, Harris was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
