Nicole Morst has won the race for the Broward County School Board District 4 seat, defeating educator Dr. Sharry Adler Kimmel in Tuesday’s nonpartisan election.
According to unofficial election results posted as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Morst received 11,334 votes, or 59.41 percent, while Kimmel received 7,744 votes, or 40.59 percent.
The victory sends Morst, a longtime parent advocate and Broward County Public Schools volunteer, to the School Board after a campaign centered on school safety, accountability, teacher retention, and improvements to aging school facilities.
Morst entered the race after years of involvement with the school district, an advocacy effort she has said intensified following the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Her involvement originally grew out of concerns about security improvements at her child’s school. Morst said she began contacting district officials and discovered that a security project expected to be completed through the district’s SMART Bond program had fallen years behind schedule.
She began attending meetings, researching delayed projects and pressing administrators to complete promised improvements. Smaller security upgrades were eventually made before the district approved a single point of entry at the school.
“That experience proved to me that a determined mother could make a huge difference,” Morst previously told Coral Springs Talk.
As of 8:30 p.m., 342 of Broward County’s 346 precincts were fully reporting, or 98.8 percent. Early voting results were complete, while Election Day and vote-by-mail results remained partially reported.
Countywide voter turnout stood at 16 percent, with 215,986 ballots counted among 1,354,142 registered voters.
The results remain unofficial until certified by election officials.
Coral Springs Talk reached out to Morst Tuesday night, but she was understandably unavailable for comment as the remaining votes continued to trickle in. We’ll update readers with her comments once she responds to our inquiries.
