A Lauderhill man has been arrested for his involvement in a $40,000 fraud scheme that targeted a senior victim through a fake magazine distribution job offer.
According to a Lauderhill Police Department incident report, Ryan Campbell, 43, of Lauderhill, was taken into custody on January 16 following a fraud investigation by the officers stemming from an incident in August of 2024.
The investigation revealed that on August 2, the victim responded to a job opportunity they believed was legitimate. The advertisement claimed to be from “Magazine Distribution Services Company,” a business claiming to distribute magazines nationwide.
Records show that after contacting the company, the victim spoke with someone identifying themselves as an employee, later confirmed as Campbell.
Campbell convinced the victim they would earn over $150,000 annually in commissions, but to secure the position, the victim was instructed to send a check for $42,500. Believing the offer was genuine, the victim mailed the check to Campbell’s address near the 2000 block of Northwest 49th Avenue.
After receiving the check, records show Campbell deposited the funds into his bank, which later flagged and closed the account due to suspicious activity, returning $39,276.89 to Campbell as a cashier’s check. He subsequently deposited this amount into a different bank account.
On January 14, investigators attempted to contact Campbell at his Lauderhill residence but found he was not home. A business card was left, and Campbell later contacted the police. A meeting was scheduled at his residence on January 16.
Arrest records show that Campbell was arrested during that pre-planned January 16 meeting. During the interview, he reportedly attempted to claim a friend who has since died put him up to the scheme and only paid him $5,000 for his part.
Campbell was transported to the Broward County Jail and is held without bond.
