Saul Vargas {BSO}
A man was arrested after authorities say he threatened to blow up and shoot up a Tamarac medical business during a phone call about obtaining his parents’ medical records.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office report, Saul Vargas, 49, of Deerfield Beach, was arrested on March 11 and charged with Threat to Bomb or Discharge a Destructive Device, a second-degree felony.
Records show deputies responded on March 10 to Las Mercedes Medical Center, located at 6674 Northwest 57th Street, after receiving a report of threats made to the company’s call center. The business director told officers that an employee had received a call from a man later identified as Vargas, who was seeking copies of his parents’ medical records.
According to investigators, the conversation began with Vargas expressing frustration about previous attempts to obtain the records but escalated into threats during the call, which lasted approximately four minutes.
The call center operator reportedly told deputies the conversation was recorded and played the audio for them on scene. During the call, Vargas allegedly told the employee he was “about to go over there and blow up the place” and later said that if he encountered further problems, he would be “liable to shoot this place up,” according to the affidavit.
Employees told deputies that the statements made them fear that Vargas might carry out the threats.
Investigators later located Vargas at the medical center lobby the following day. During questioning, Vargas admitted to making the phone call and admitted to making statements about blowing up and shooting up the business, according to the report.
Vargas also told deputies he made the call from his parents’ Deerfield Beach residence and stated that he owns firearms, investigators said.
He was taken into custody and booked into the Broward County Main Jail. He’s currently held on a $25,000 bond.
