Dear Neighbors
June is here, and the summer temperatures are already breaking records! It’s a great time to take advantage of the fantastic events we have planned this month, where you can beat the heat while having fun with friends and family.
Please remember that when it gets this hot, it’s important to stay hydrated and limit your sun exposure. Being sure to have a water bottle with you and drink plenty of water throughout the day. It will prevent dehydration, which can cause headaches, muscle cramps, and dizziness. Too much time in the sun can cause heat stroke, which can lead to nausea, vomiting, and even loss of consciousness. Avoid being in the sun for long periods, especially during the hottest part of the day, and stay in the shade or spend more time in air-conditioned places instead. If you’re making plans with friends, suggest meeting in cool, indoor spaces like the Kings Point Clubhouse, restaurants, or movie theaters.
And don’t forget that hot weather can be dangerous for pets, too! Never leave your pet in a car, even for a minute. Remember that high humidity also makes it harder for pets to cool off by panting or sweating when the temperatures soar. Any time your pet is outside, make sure they are out of the sun and have plenty of cold water. Limit exercise on hot days, and be mindful of hot pavement under their paws. Be aware that, just like people, the heat affects some pets more than others. Pets that are very old, very young, overweight, unused to exercise, and those with heart or respiratory issues are at higher risk than others. Also, make sure you have a plan to keep your pet cool if a storm makes your house lose power. Let’s keep our fur babies safe and comfortable this summer!
Thursday, June 6th marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day. On that date in 1944, our courageous troops stormed the beaches of Nazi-occupied France in what was then the largest naval, air, and land operation in history. It was a crucial turning point in World War II and marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. Thousands of brave Americans died on that day, many were injured, and still more continued to fight until the war was won. On June 6th and always, we remember their heroism and sacrifice with deepest gratitude.
Also, on June 6th, join me at 7:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center (8601 W. Commercial Blvd.) for our next free Move with the Mayor class as we build physical strength, flexibility, and our mind-body connection through Yoga. Be sure to mark your calendar now for next month’s Power Circuit session at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 13th, and Zumba at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 9th, both located at Tamarac Recreation Center (7501 N. University Dr.). For the full schedule for the rest of the year, please check the City’s website.
This is an election year, so please join us for a Q&A with Broward Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott on June 20th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Community Center. It’s a great opportunity to get up-to-date information and answers to all your questions regarding the voting process for the August and November elections.
