Reece Anglin {BSO}
A second man has been charged in a Feb. 12 police-involved shooting in Lauderhill that left a man wounded, authorities said.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives, Reece Anglin, 32, of Lauderhill, was taken into custody on Feb. 14 by Tampa Police Department officers. Detectives said Anglin was arrested on a warrant related to the Feb. 12 shooting, from which he fled.
Following his arrest, Anglin was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. On Thursday, Anglin was transferred to the Broward Main Jail.
Authorities said another man, Tafari Elliot, 28, of Lauderhill, was struck by gunfire after he and Anglin confronted BSO deputies and police officers during a joint anti-gang operation Feb. 12 at the Calypso Cay apartments in the 4100 block of Northwest 21st Street in Lauderhill.
According to BSO, the two men pointed guns at members of BSO’s Gang Investigations Task Force, which includes members of the Lauderhill Police Department.
A BSO deputy drew his duty weapon, identified himself as a law enforcement officer, and issued commands for the men to drop their firearms and get on the ground, the sheriff’s office said.
Neither of the men complied, according to BSO. Instead, both men fired their guns at the task force members, who returned fire, BSO officials said.
A BSO deputy and a Lauderhill Police officer both fired their weapons during the incident, according to BSO.
Responding officers took the wounded Elliot into custody in the apartment complex and began providing medical aid, officials said. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment, where he remains hospitalized, according to BSO. He faces two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
Anglin managed to evade authorities until his capture on Feb. 14, detectives said.
Neither law enforcement officer was injured during the shooting. Detectives said they recovered several firearms at the scene.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the use of force by the task force members, while BSO’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the crimes committed by Elliot and the second man, according to BSO.
The BSO deputy who fired his gun has been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation, which is standard BSO procedure.
