School is out for summer and whether you are taking some time to relax on vacation, or staying home and the kids are in camp, Broward County is here to make this summer great.
June is also the start of Hurricane Season and a great time to dust off the checklist and buy supplies. Florida’s Disaster Sales Tax holiday for hurricane supplies is June 1- June 14. In addition, the exciting World Cup of Cricket will have matches taking place between the world’s best teams right here at Central Broward Regional Park. Enjoy the festivities, check out activities at our beautiful parks, or relax with a book on your summer reading list from a Broward County library!
Broward County’s Public Works Department is full steam ahead on two projects of great importance to District 3. In Coral Springs, Broward County has begun the rehabilitation process of the Bridge at Atlantic Boulevard and Coral Ridge Drive. Slated for completion later this year, this project will provide motorists with safe travel while performing vital maintenance. Construction will have minimal impact to traffic and utilize floating platforms on the underside of the bridge to accomplish the construction. The second major infrastructure construction is the new Port Bypass Road Project. The $55 million dollar investment will alleviate traffic surrounding the port and provide easier access to the cruise terminals or a trip to the beach. Along with the completion of the construction of the convention center hotel, this project will increase efficiency and make the travel experience better for all.
In June, the Board of County Commissioners will complete budget workshops to review and set priorities for Broward County’s budget. Topics discussed will include public safety services like police and fire, funding of the Supervisor of Elections and Property Appraiser’s office, wastewater services, and the commission budget priorities. Budget workshops are open to the public and are also available online via the County’s website and streaming platforms. This deep dive showcases the services Broward County provides, and how these services are funded. I will also be laser focused on the the millage rate to see where there are opportunities to save taxpayer dollars. As your County Commissioner, I will make sure that District 3’s voice is heard as we continue through the budget process, and work towards budget passage in the fall.
June 19th is Juneteenth. The holiday commemorates the abolition of slavery on June 19th, 1865. Broward Libraries will be hosting educational programs that will be open to the public and provide information as well as an opportunity to celebrate together. In addition, many cities throughout District 3 host celebrations and I encourage the community to attend.
Finally, Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Being a father is one of the biggest responsibilities and one of the greatest joys in life. I hope all the dad’s out there have a relaxing Father’s Day and enjoy!
