Kevon Powell {BSO}
A Tamarac man was arrested and charged with grand theft of a firearm and discharging a firearm in public after deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office report, on March 28, deputies were dispatched to the 5900 block of Abbey Road following reports of two males shooting handguns into the canal. Callers described the two men as one being seemingly older and the other as a younger black male.
Deputies arrived and cleared the canal bank west of the townhomes. During their sweep, they located two shell casings in the grass near the water.
The report shows that deputies — now with evidence of a recent shooting — canvassed the area and spoke with a witness who reported hearing the gunfire. From his second-floor window, the witness observed two males near the canal, noting that only one of them was shooting and collecting spent casings.
Shortly afterward, deputies observed a man walking near the 5900 block of Riverside Avenue who matched the initial suspect’s description. The man, later identified as Kevon Powell, 21, of Tamarac, was stopped and questioned. He admitted to having a firearm and discharging it several times into the canal.
Records show Powell later claimed the second suspect that accompanied him was his younger brother but claimed his brother never handled the weapon.
Powell informed deputies that the firearm was inside a fanny pack located in a closet on the first floor of his mother’s nearby residence near the 5900 block of Riverside Avenue. With consent from Powell’s mother, deputies entered the home and recovered the fanny pack.
Inside the bag, deputies found a loaded handgun along with multiple rounds of ammunition. Also discovered in the fanny pack were Powell’s documents, including his birth certificate, Social Security card, and several bank cards.
Although Powell claimed the gun and bag belonged to a friend known only as “Ace,” the presence of his personal belongings inside the fanny pack contradicted this.
Investigators noted that the weapon showed visible signs of having been recently fired. A check of the firearm’s serial number revealed it had been reported stolen out of Palm Beach County.
Additionally, Powell was found to violate an active protection order by possessing a firearm.
Powell was arrested and transported to Broward County Main Jail.
