Families got together at the Tamarac Community Center for the Back-to-School Special Needs and Community Resource Fair.
Parents and children were able to visit various groups offering services and activities geared toward families, including the Girl Scouts of Blazing Star and Tamarac Fire Rescue.
Children received free backpacks containing some school supplies and a pair of athletic shoes. “This brings the community together before school and helps children who need backpacks,” said Mayor Michelle J. Gomez.
Helping children who need stylish athletic shoes was important to Jahbari Newton, a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity at Nova Southeastern University. He and fellow members were distributing shoes. “I know it is important for children to have comfortable shoes,” he said.

The No Limits Foundation hosted a fashion show featuring children modeling clothing and backpacks. Tia Frost, CEO and founder of the Foundation and a clothing model, wanted to create a special and fun activity for the children.
She got the idea for a fashion show when her son, John, came to her and said, “I want to model clothing like you do.”
So, Frost got to work and arranged for a fashion show to be held during the back-to-school event. “We are helping special needs children with arts and culture, and this was a good way for our children to be part of a creative and fun event,” said Frost.
