Broward County Updates Pet Tag Fees to Encourage Microchipping and Responsible Ownership

Broward County Animal Care is introducing changes to its pet tag pricing, effective May 1, to promote responsible pet ownership.

Under the updated fee structure, annual renewal costs are $25 for microchipped dogs and cats and $55 for those without a microchip. The County’s innovative “Tags for Life” program, which allows pets to keep a single durable tag throughout their lifetime, remains in place.

“Animal Care has simplified how we charge for pet tags while continuing to prioritize safety, convenience, and responsible ownership,” said Doug Brightwell, Director of Broward County Animal Care. “This change supports our mission to protect pets while making it easier for owners to stay in compliance and avoid fines.”

Officials say the new structure encourages microchipping, which significantly increases the likelihood of lost pets being reunited with their owners. Broward County law requires all dogs and cats to be registered and current on their rabies vaccinations.

Launched earlier this year, the Tags for Life program allows pet owners to renew their pet’s registration annually without the need to replace the physical tag.

The new fee schedule is:

Microchipped Dogs and Cats: $25
Non-Microchipped Dogs and Cats: $55

Residents can register or renew their pet’s tag by visiting PetTags.Broward.org.
