“The Dog Is Dead! I’ll Kill Everyone Here!”: Deputies Say Man Stole Dog From Animal Hospital After Cancer Diagnosis

A man is accused of threatening employees at a Tamarac animal hospital, taking his dog after learning it had terminal cancer, and leaving without paying a veterinary bill.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest records, Jason Anthony Pacheco, 56, of Pembroke Pines, was arrested July 13 on first-degree felony charges, including burglary with assault or battery, three counts of assault, and petit theft. 

Records show Pacheco first contacted the veterinary office seeking donations or charity assistance for his dog, Precious Pacheco, because he could not afford treatment. He allegedly told staff he had previously taken the dog to Broward Humane Society but was unable to afford the vet bills. 

Staff told investigators that they told Pacheco their charity fund was dry, but they discussed potential financing options and scheduled him to bring the dog in later that afternoon.

When Pacheco arrived with the dog, veterinarians performed blood work and diagnostic testing before determining the animal had terminal cancer and recommending euthanasia, investigators said. Staff explained to Pacheco that he would still be responsible for the $505 bill even if the dog was put down. 

Deputies say Pacheco became irate; he removed his shirt, entered a restricted employee-only area, and began shouting threats, including statements that he would kill everyone inside. 

Employees reported a chaotic scene that included one account from a staff member who told investigators she locked herself inside an examination room after hearing a loud bang and a man screaming, “The dog is dead! I’ll kill everyone here!” 

Another employee said she fled through a back door because she feared people were about to be killed. 

Investigators said Pacheco removed the dog from a kennel in the restricted area without authorization and left the business without paying for the veterinary services.

After the incident, a law enforcement bulletin was issued. Pembroke Pines Police located Pacheco at his residence, where he was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
