A homeless man posing as a pastor offering handyman services has been arrested in connection with a burglary spree in Tamarac.
On October 17, the Broward County Sheriff’s Department responded to a residential burglary call from a residence in Tamarac. Upon arrival, deputies found the victims’ home ransacked, with drawers opened, personal items scattered, and a front window shattered.
According to the victims, they arrived home to find their home broken into and burglarized. One victim mentioned missing motion alerts from her Ring security camera due to a work meeting.
BSO records show stolen items, including a $200 King Kong duffle bag, two Captain America memorabilia cards worth $75 each, and a gold Michael Kors watch worth $210. The damage to the broken window was estimated at $1,200.
During the investigation, BSO records show that deputies connected the burglary to suspicious incidents reported earlier in the same area.
According to BSO, just hours earlier, deputies had responded to a suspicious person call involving a man, later identified as a 68-year-old homeless man named Anthony Powell, soliciting lawn services door-to-door. The homeowner had observed the man knocking on the front and back doors and found his behavior suspicious.
Records show BSO deputies initially identified the suspect during an encounter as “Anthony Killebrew.” However, further investigation revealed his true identity as that of Powell, who claimed to be a former pastor offering handyman and lawn services.
At the time of the encounter, Powell had no active warrants and was allowed to leave the area.
Investigation records show the investigation into Powell’s whereabouts turned on October 19, when Lauderhill Police detained him in response to another suspicious person’s call. Powell was subsequently found in possession of stolen items linked to multiple burglaries.
Among the items recovered were a power drill engraved with the victim’s name from a separate case and a gold pendant matching the victim’s description. Powell also carried the stolen King Kong duffle bag containing Captain America memorabilia and a Michael Kors watch.
When confronted with the evidence, Powell asked for a lawyer.
Powell was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He faces multiple charges, including felony burglary and criminal mischief.
