J.P. Taravella High School had one of its busiest weeks, with postseason starting, playoff games, and multiple football games.
The swim team held its senior night on Tuesday during their meet against Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The Trojans recognized Jonel Bailey, Ransom Browdy, Joslyn Brown, Rwani Ceballos, Dani Garmendia, Isabel Joussef, Jarel Mercedes, and Nadia Sanchez.
“From first-year swimmers to four-year swimmers, these seniors have all contributed their unique talents to the team,” Head Coach Candy Allen said. We will miss them.”
The meet featured 24 events, with the boys team winning four events. Lennin Hamilton, Josh DeSouza, Zane Samms, and Xyen Walker won the 200-yard freestyle relay, while Davis filled in for Walker in the 400-yard freestyle and also placed first. Individually, Jayden Davis won the 50-yard freestyle, while DeSouza took first in the 100-yard freestyle. Morgan Thomas led the girls, finishing third in three races, including the 200-yard freestyle. Zac Bricher also impressed for JPT, placing second in the 500-yard freestyle.
They then went on to Disticts, with the boys qualifying for two relays and Zane Samms and Zac Bricher qualifying for two interval races. Lenin Hamilton and Michael Michalek will also compete at Regional, while the girls team qualified for three relays. Mariana Sanchez and Rawani Ceballos earned their spots in two races, along with Valentina Ordonez in one.
The girls’ volleyball team came into the postseason as the seventh seed but lost to Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the opening round of the District Tournament. The Trojans still had a strong season, beating Dillard, Blanche Ely, Plantation, Stranahan, Coconut Creek, and Miramar High School. They featured seven seniors: Aniza Zahid, U’myri Bain, Valentine Arias, Brooke Bunting, Chelsea Baxter, Lauren Beaty, and Camilla Cuba Dorado.
JPT is on a tough stretch in football, playing in two games last week and dropping them both. They had a make-up game against Coral Springs Charter on Monday and lost 65-0 before falling in the Swamp Bowl on Thursday against Coral Glades.
The Trojans then lost 35-0 against Coral Springs Charter and will play at 65-0 against Goleman High School. JPT will close the regular season with a senior night game on November 1 against Coral Springs High School. The Colts are also winless this year, but won four games last year, including against the Trojans.
The boys bowling team also completed a dominant regular season, finishing in first place. They will head to districts and potentially have several bowlers compete in the State competition next month. They also recognized seniors Zachary Kimbrell, Marvin Nixon, Maharaj, and Bryce Collins. Kimbrell went on to win Districts with a score of 765, while Bryce Collins took third with 656 pins. They will both head to states along with Nixon, Chyanne Vanwinkle, Hunter Woodruff, and Marahak.
In cross country, the boys team finished in second, led by Akeen Beckford in 18th place. Elijah Vessels was next, followed by Makenly Bonamy, Scardy Fils, Dominic Martinez, Jahree Pierre, and Akeil Kidd. The girls team came in ninth with Olivia Noel, Raquel Arne, Giavanna Lionelli, Camila Castillo, and Meital Pavolotzky all racing. Ali Mustafa took first place in the junior varsity race at the junior varsity level while Saul Flores came in eighth and Nakhai Reid finished 13th.
