A Tamarac woman is accused of orchestrating a years-long identity theft scheme involving multiple victims, including allegedly using the identity of a woman who died in 2017 to obtain housing, employment, and more than $50,000 through fraud.
According to a BSO arrest report, Pearl Sharrell Young, 40, was arrested July 8 after a traffic stop in Tamarac. Investigators say the stop uncovered evidence of an extensive identity theft operation spanning multiple years and involving numerous fraudulent documents and transactions.
Records show deputies stopped Young after observing her driving with a suspended license near North University Drive and West Commercial Boulevard. Authorities say she initially identified herself using another woman’s name before eventually admitting her true identity.
The investigation, however, had already been underway, and authorities were on the hunt for Young for a slew of additional alleged crimes.
Detectives say the family of a woman who died in 2017 contacted law enforcement after discovering someone was continuing to use the deceased woman’s identity years after her death.
According to detectives, they uncovered evidence that Young had allegedly used the victim’s personal information to obtain driver’s licenses, employment, rental housing, banking records, and other official documents. Authorities also allege she fraudulently obtained more than $50,000 while using the deceased woman’s identity.
During questioning following her arrest, Young allegedly admitted using the deceased woman’s personal identifying information to obtain employment and complete various financial and housing documents.
The July arrest was not Young’s first encounter with investigators over identity theft allegations.
Court records show she was arrested in June on charges stemming from a separate Coral Springs Police investigation that began after an April 2025 traffic stop. During that stop, detectives say Young was pulled over for speeding and told the deputy she had left her driver’s license at home.
Authorities allege she then identified herself using her sister’s name and date of birth. Investigators became suspicious after she was unable to correctly spell the name she provided and gave conflicting explanations about who was in the vehicle with her.
Several weeks later, the woman whose identity had allegedly been used contacted investigators and reported that Young – her sister – had impersonated her during the traffic stop.
According to the affidavit, the victim told detectives it was not the first time Young had used her identity. That investigation expanded once more as allegations poured in.
Coral Springs detectives allege Young used her sister’s driver’s license, employment information, and other personal identifying information to secure an apartment at Symphony Builders in Coral Springs.
Young was booked into the Broward County Main Jail. Records show that since she has been in custody, additional felony charges have been added to her record, indicating an investigation that is still underway.
