A Tamarac father faces an attempted murder charge after deputies say he shot at his son during a dispute over $240 in bail money.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Rodencia Thomas, 52, was arrested following the altercation on August 5 and is facing charges of attempted felony murder and domestic battery by strangulation stemming from an incident that began when Thomas went to his son’s home to collect $240 he was owed after bailing his son out of jail the previous week.
Records show his son told deputies he only had $120 available and planned to pay the remaining $120 at the end of the month. He said the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation.
The struggle continued inside the home, where both men fell to the floor. The son alleged that Thomas then placed his forearm around his throat and choked him. Thomas’ girlfriend told deputies she entered the home after hearing the argument and found the father and son fighting. She was able to separate them, according to the report.
Investigators said Thomas then walked toward his girlfriend’s black pickup truck and recovered a handgun that was kept in the center console. His girlfriend told deputies she followed him toward the truck while repeatedly urging him not to do anything “stupid” and attempting to calm the situation.
According to deputies, she saw Thomas retrieve the handgun and head back toward his son. Thomas’ son told investigators he attempted to get away and fell in the grass before reaching the doorway of the home. He alleged that Thomas raised the handgun, pointed it at him and fired once. The shot missed.
Deputies later discovered what appeared to be a bullet hole in the lower right portion of the home’s exterior wall near the doorway where the son had been standing.
Deputies documented scratches around the son’s throat and on the back of his neck, along with a large scratch on his back. Investigators also reported finding damage inside the residence, including a hole in a wall near the floor where the two men had fallen during the fight.
The son told deputies he believed his father intended to kill him.
Thomas was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he is held without bond.
