A woman has been charged with vehicular homicide after police determined she hit a Tamarac man with her car and fled the scene – with THC in her system, police records show.
Tatiana Cruz, 21, of Coconut Creek was driving a white 2016 Toyota Corolla over the speed limit around 6:24 p.m. on January 14 when her car struck Marc Robin, 69, of Tamarac, in the 4200 block of Lyons Road near Promenade at Coconut Creek, an arrest affidavit states.
Cruz had just made a left turn from Wiles Road onto Lyons Road and was driving south in the center lane when she struck Robin, who was walking west across Lyons Road, police said.
Robin was hit by the Corolla as he started to cross the center lane of Lyons Road southbound, the affidavit states.
Police said the Corolla inflicted massive trauma on Robin. The car sustained major damage in the crash, including a shattered windshield.
After the impact, police said Cruz continued driving south on Lyons Road and failed to stop to help the terminally injured Robin.
A voluntary blood draw revealed Cruz had the psychoactive metabolite THC in her system the night of the crash, police said.
“If Cruz would have been driving at or near the posted speed limit of 45 mph, Robin would have made it across Lyons Road avoiding the crash,” the arrest affidavit states.
“After impacting Robin with her vehicle, Cruz failed to stop her vehicle immediately at the scene of the crash or as close thereto as possible and remain on scene of the crash to render aid, which resulted in the death of Marc Robin.”
After more than four months of investigation, Cruz was charged on May 29 with vehicular homicide, careless driving, failure to stop or remain at an accident scene, and violating driver restrictions, records show.
Records show she was free as of Saturday on a $50,000 bond. A judge has required her to wear a GPS monitor.
Robin, a musician, father of two daughters, and grandfather, was remembered online as an “amazing human being” who touched numerous lives.
He supported his wife of 43 years, who cannot work due to a stroke, according to a GoFundMe page launched to help his family.
