Residents interested in becoming United States citizens will have an opportunity to receive free assistance during a citizenship drive scheduled for Saturday, March 14, at the Tamarac Community Center.
The event, hosted by Vice Mayor Kicia Daniel, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community center, located at 8601 W. Commercial Blvd.
The initiative aims to help legal permanent residents begin the process of applying for U.S. citizenship by providing guidance and application support.
The citizenship drive will offer help with completing naturalization applications and determining eligibility. Organizers say becoming a U.S. citizen can provide several benefits, including the right to vote, the ability to obtain a U.S. passport, easier international travel, and additional immigration options for family members.
Residents planning to attend are asked to bring their permanent resident card (Green Card), even if it has expired or is close to expiring. Those seeking to qualify for an application fee waiver should bring supporting documents such as their 2024 tax return, a food stamp document, a Medicaid award letter, or a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) letter.
To qualify for citizenship, applicants must be at least 18 years old and have been a legal permanent resident for five years, or three years if married to a U.S. citizen.
Residents who are unsure about their eligibility are encouraged to attend the event to receive guidance and learn about the naturalization process.
Participants are encouraged to reserve a spot in advance online with the Florida Immigrant Coalition.
