Nine deputies will be brought on to bolster the ranks of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Tamarac District force, officials said.
Tamarac city commissioners unanimously approved the addition of the deputies, most of whom will be assigned to road patrol, according to BSO Captain Jemeriah Cooper, who leads the agency’s Tamarac district.
Cooper said he would meet with Tamarac City Manager Levent Sucuoglu “to discuss the appropriate placement of the officers, but primarily, the officers are going to be on road patrol, assigned to specific shifts.”
“Due to the amount of officers we have, we definitely have room to place some on specialized units,” Cooper added.
Cooper said he did not know whether the additional deputies would be new BSO hires or transfers from other BSO districts.
He said the deputies would be brought on as soon as possible but did not provide a time frame.
Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Cooper said:
– Crime in Tamarac was down 12.5 percent through the end of September 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
BSO will explore the possibility of adding an additional Tamarac detective to its Criminal Investigations Division in response to commission members’ concerns about scams and fraud in Tamarac.
– The Tamarac District force currently has a detective dedicated to investigating scams, including those targeting the elderly.
– Under BSO’s contract with Tamarac, the agency must staff the district with at least 20 deputies within each 24-hour period.
