A man was arrested after he called 911 from inside a victim’s home. He had locked himself in while trying to escape a brutal beating from the homeowner who caught him red-handed burglarizing his car.
On June 4, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an odd 911 report of an altercation within the Prospect Park complex near the 5500 block of Northwest 31 Street.
According to reports, the initial caller, later identified as Garrett Brown, 50, of Tamarac, was the man later charged with drug possession, burglary, and assault, calling from within the eventual victim’s residence.
The incident report shows that while Brown was allegedly burglarizing a vehicle in the complex, the victim, the owner of the vehicle, observed the burglary in progress and confronted Brown inside the car.
The victim later would tell deputies that the confrontation escalated as the victim began striking Brown with closed fists to his face in an attempt to remove him from his vehicle.
BSO records show the physical altercation spilled onto the roadway, where the victim continued to punch and kick Brown. Seeking refuge, Brown fled into the victim’s residence and locked himself in the bathroom.
During this time, Brown called 911 and told the operator a chaotic story, stating that he was a customer who locked himself in the bathroom and that he works for Weston Plumbing. He woke up, and someone was beating him up. He ran into the bathroom and locked himself. He did not know the address.
Upon arrival, deputies spoke to the victim and used a PA speaker and cellphone calls to get Brown to exit the residence. Brown eventually complied and was immediately taken into custody by officers.
During the investigation, it was revealed that nothing was removed from the vehicle.
A search of Brown during the arrest uncovered a black cross bag containing a clear baggie with white crystals. The substance tested positive for MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.
The BSO report shows that video surveillance from the Prospect Park apartment complex captured the incident on camera, corroborating the victim’s account.
While under arrest, records show Brown admitted that he had entered the victim’s vehicle, acknowledging, “It was wrong.” He also confessed to entering the residence, stating, “It was just to get away from him.”
Due to his injuries, Brown was admitted to Florida Medical Center for medical attention. Upon his release, he was transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was released after posting a $5,000 bond.
