Authorities searching for a credit card fraudster released surveillance footage on Monday. The alleged culprit may also have been behind a smash-and-grab theft in Tamarac.
A female victim’s $1,700 designer purse containing her personal identification, credit cards, and other items was stolen shortly before 7 p.m. July 14 when an unidentified thief smashed the rear passenger window of her 2021 white Jeep Cherokee, which was parked near the 9000 block of Northwest 58th Street in Tamarac, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
A day later, detectives with BSO’s North Lauderdale District said a person was caught on camera using one of the stolen credit cards at a North Lauderdale Home Depot.
Surveillance footage at the store around 9:20 a.m. showed a man wearing a white shirt and dark shorts buying a 4,000-watt generator for $961.93 with the smash-and-grab victim’s stolen credit card.
The person also fraudulently purchased items in Coral Springs, according to BSO.
Authorities did not say whether they believe the credit card fraudster and smash-and-grab thief are the same person.
Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call BSO North Lauderdale District Detective Sergio Espinoza at (954) 720-2265 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch App.
Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous and become eligible for a cash reward should contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), submit a tip online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477) from any cell phone in the United States.
