Kayborn Gonzalez {BSO}
A man in a hallucination-like state was arrested after allegedly chasing employees through a restaurant with a gun.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office report, the incident on April 26 began after 911 calls reported a bizarre and dangerous encounter outside Little Ochi Carl’s Seafood Restaurant located at 5726 North University Drive.
Authorities say the suspect, later identified as Kayborn Gonzalez, 24, of Sunrise, first appeared at a nearby Denny’s, where witnesses reported him exiting the bathroom with a gun visible in his waistband. Deputies responded after multiple calls about a suspicious male with a firearm running down University Drive.
According to the arrest affidavit, a restaurant employee for Little Ochi Carl’s was grilling outside when Gonzalez approached him without saying a word. After the employee offered him food and stepped inside the closed kitchen area to retrieve it, another worker spotted Gonzalez inside, now holding a black handgun and pointing it at them.
The report shows both employees told deputies they fled the scene by jumping over the counter and running out the front door, while Gonzalez reportedly gave chase.
Deputies on the scene noted in the report that they canvassed the area and later discovered a pair of black pants and red-and-white Jordan sneakers discarded near the restaurant. These items matched the description many 911 callers had given of the suspect.
Gonzalez was eventually located at Woodmont Hospital, where his brother had taken him after he began bleeding and showing signs of mental distress.
At the hospital, Gonzalez appeared disoriented and largely unresponsive, officers noted, describing him as in a “hallucination state” and “mumbling words very low and looking up at the sky.”
After being identified by both restaurant employees in a show-up, Gonzalez was arrested and medically cleared before being transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
Once at the jail, Gonzalez allegedly assaulted a correctional officer during intake, biting the deputy on the knuckle of his right pinky finger, adding a third felony aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer charge.
