A man was arrested Wednesday and charged in the accidental shooting death of his six-year-old nephew in Tamarac, authorities said.
Odaine Hall was being watched by his uncle, Carika Hall, 25, of Tamarac when he “obtained an unsecured firearm and accidentally shot himself,” according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office
The shooting happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, inside a residence near the 5600 block of Rock Island Road in Tamarac, authorities said.
Tamarac BSO deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue rushed to the scene and found Odaine Hall suffering from a single gunshot wound, according to BSO. The child died at the scene.
BSO’s V.I.P.E.R. (Violent Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) unit arrested Carika Hall Wednesday at his Tamarac home on charges of culpable negligence and neglect of a child, authorities said.
Records show Hall was being held at the Broward Main Jail Thursday on a $10,000 bond.
BSO on Thursday urged gun owners to make sure their guns are unloaded and stored in a locked storage container that is not easily accessible to minors.
Authorities also said gun owners should use a trigger lock, store ammunition in a locked location separate from their guns, and double-check their firearms whenever they remove them from storage to make sure they are unloaded.
