North Lauderdale City Commissioner Regina Martin was arrested Sunday on a domestic battery charge for throwing two plastic perfume bottles at a family member, court records show.
Broward Sheriff’s Office North Lauderdale District deputies responded to a call about the domestic violence incident involving Martin, 42, at an unspecified residence in the city around 8 p.m., according to an arrest affidavit.
The affidavit states that Martin had confronted the female relative for not coming home the previous night.
“Due to [the relative] lying to Regina, she threw 2 plastic bottles of Bath and Body Works spray at [the relative],” the document states. “One of the bottles struck [the relative] on the upper portion of her right arm just below the shoulder. This resulted in minor bruising” on her right shoulder.
No other injuries were discovered, deputies wrote.
The victim agreed to provide deputies with a photograph showing her injury; “however, she did not provide a sworn statement,” the affidavit states. She said she did not need medical treatment, according to deputies.
“Due to their relationship status and having struck [the victim] with a perfume bottle, the offender was charged with Touch or Strike Battery Domestic Violence,” the affidavit states.
Court records on Monday showed Martin was being held at BSO’s Paul Rein Detention Facility with her bond pending.
According to Martin’s biography on North Lauderdale’s website, she became the first African American Caribbean woman elected to office in the city in November 2022.
A South Florida native, Martin is senior pastor at Embassy Church of South Florida in Oakland Park and the founder and operator of Embassy College and The Embassy Academy, a K-12 private Christian school, the site states.
Records show that Martin represents District C in North Lauderdale and faces two challengers in the Nov. 5 election: Kimotta Johnson and Morfydd (Mar) Woodbine.
