
North Lauderdale Fire Rescue. {Aiden Palmer}
A 39-year-old man died following a single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning in North Lauderdale, and authorities believe a medical emergency may have been a factor.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit, the crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. near the 1700 block of Southwest 83rd Avenue. Investigators said the driver, identified as Christopher Lucas, of North Lauderdale, was traveling south in a 2002 Toyota Camry when he failed to navigate a curve at Southwest 17th Street.
Investigators said the Camry continued over a raised concrete curb, broke through a metal fence, and collided with a building.
Lucas was rushed by North Lauderdale Fire Rescue to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to BSO.
Detectives said the relatively low speed of the crash and minimal damage involved suggest Lucas may have experienced a medical episode before the collision. His family confirmed he had a preexisting health condition, authorities said.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, according to detectives.
