Tamarac Makes Storm Preparations as Milton Intensifies

Tamarac Commission Discusses Budget, $25k Initiatives and $700 Monthly Car Allowance

Tamarac parks will close at noon on Wednesday and Thursday as South Florida prepares for Hurricane Milton’s potential impact.

The storm, about 700 miles from Florida’s west coast in the Gulf of Mexico, strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane Monday afternoon with sustained winds of 175 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 2 pm. advisory.

Milton rapidly intensified from a Category 2 to 5 over a few hours Monday. The advisory said the storm’s strength by Tuesday “should be dictated by any eyewall replacement cycles, which will likely cause the system to gradually weaken but grow larger. “

In addition to shortening city park hours, Tamarac officials said that workers were “actively managing canal levels throughout the city and keeping storm drains clear of debris to reduce potential flooding,” according to the city’s Facebook page.

The city also pushed Wednesday’s planned commission back to Monday, October 14, at 7 p.m.

Milton, described by the NHS as an “extremely dangerous” hurricane, could potentially bring life-threatening flooding and winds to Florida’s west coast, with a storm surge of eight to 12 feet possible for Tampa and other communities along the Gulf.

South Florida is expected to feel some impact from the storm, though the severity of the impact remains unclear.
