A Tamarac man has been arrested and charged with child abuse following a welfare check that revealed multiple injuries consistent with physical abuse of children in his care.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office report, on November 23, Reginald Jude Bazile, 53, was taken into custody on charges of child abuse. His arrest came after the mother of the child – who currently resides in Haiti – witnessed him abusing the child while she was on Facetime with him and grew concerned about the children’s well-being.
Records show law enforcement officers observed significant injuries on a child during the routine follow-up welfare check.
The injuries included a dark, U-shaped bruise on the victim’s left cheek, contusions with minor lacerations above both ears, a contusion on the back of the head, and a large contusion on the right side of the forehead.
Additionally, the report shows that the child’s back and right side displayed deep belt welts, and dried blood stains were visible on the shirt collar.
Deputies detailed in the arrest report that they also assessed other children in the household and found similar belt welts on one other child. When questioned, the children did not initially explain their injuries but confirmed that their father used a belt as a method of discipline.
According to the police report, one officer who arrived on the scene questioned the injured child, who admitted that his father had struck him. Another child corroborated the victim’s account, stating to law enforcement that Bazile had hit the victim on the head with a belt.
Based on the evidence and witness statements, Bazile was arrested and charged with one count of cruelty toward a child and child abuse without great bodily harm.
The Department of Children and Families was notified, and the children have been placed in protective custody.
Bazile was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was later released after posting a $5,000 bond.
