U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) on Wednesday will present a check for $1,666,279 in federal dollars to boost Tamarac’s affordable housing programs, according to the city.
According to Mayor Michelle Gomez, the funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) “will greatly enhance our efforts to provide safe and affordable housing for low-to-moderate-income families in our community.
Rising construction costs have made critical repairs like roof replacements difficult to afford for city residents, officials said. Homeowners are also facing pressure from insurance companies to quickly complete roof repairs to avoid losing coverage.
With 250 households currently on the waiting list for emergency roof replacements in Tamarac, the HUD funding is urgently needed, according to the city.
Officials said the money is earmarked for “essential housing rehabilitation and repair assistance” for homeowners and rental assistance for tenants.
Cherfilus-McCormick will deliver the check at Wednesday’s Tamarac City Commission meeting at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall, 7525 NW 88th Ave.
