A driver was killed late Monday night following a deputy-involved crash near West Prospect Road and Northwest 31st Avenue in Tamarac, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
At about 11:57 p.m. Monday, Broward County Regional Communications was notified of the crash. Investigators said the incident involved a stolen vehicle out of Margate.
Detectives said the Margate Police Department had issued a Be On the Lookout alert earlier that night regarding the stolen vehicle, which was later spotted in Tamarac.
At some point, a crash occurred involving a BSO patrol car and a civilian vehicle, investigators said. Authorities did not say how far away that crash occurred from the stolen vehicle.
A second crash involving the stolen vehicle happened a short time later, authorities said. The suspect in the stolen vehicle was then taken into custody, authorities said.
The deputy involved in the crash, the suspected car thief, the civilian vehicle driver, and a passenger in the civilian vehicle were all transported to an area hospital for treatment. The civilian driver was later pronounced dead, according to BSO.
The other people involved, including the deputy, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Detectives with BSO’s Traffic Homicide and Violent Crimes Units were notified to investigate. BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit has opened an administrative investigation into the incident, according to BSO.
The investigation was continuing Tuesday night.
