The fitness and exercise community participated in the Tamarac for the Cure 5K Walk/Run at the Tamarac Sports Complex on the morning of October 11.
The event brought the community together to show unity in the fight against breast cancer. Participants could say they ran or walked with Yohan Blake, considered the second fastest man in the world in the 100-meter and 200-meter runs. A Jamaican sprinter who won silver medals in the 100 and 200 meters in the 2012 Olympic Games behind Usain Bolt, he joined in the run.
The run/walk was led by Commissioner Marlon Bolton, who promoted it extensively on social media. It began with a performance by the Piper High School marching band, followed by exercises such as stretching and jumping jacks. Then all the participants were encouraged to walk around the park and complete a non-competitive fun run.
Bolton announced that individuals who wanted to participate in “a professional run” could compete in a 5k (3.1-mile) run in the park. There were some experienced and talented athletes in the run. Khiro Hoilett, the track and cross-country coach at Coral Springs High School, won first place. He ran for the Valdosta State University cross-country team and was a runner for Coral Springs while in high school.
“I felt blessed to run in this race, and I enjoyed being a part of it. I want to encourage my high school runners to do their best,” he said.
Tyrese Bowes, a cross-country runner for St. Thomas University, came in second, and Courtney Warren came in third. Most of the runners and walkers were there to participate in a fun fitness event and to support the fight against breast cancer. Before and after the run, they enjoyed socializing.
Bolton was pleased with the event. “We had about 1,000 participants and everyone had a good time,” he said.
